3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Description. The gloves shall be leather, of the gunn cut pattern, with a one-piece continuous back. They shall be inseam sewn. All seams except the hem and two rolls of outseam stitching joining the front of the gauntlet to the palm shall include leather reinforcing welts. The seam at the base of the second and third fingers shall be outseam sewn with two rows of stitching and shall be covered with a leather welt. Each pair of gloves shall be matched, paired, and tacked together so that they can be easily pulled apart without damage.
3.2 Material.
3.2.1 Leather. The leather shall be flesh split cattlehide bends and shall be suitable for use in gloves. Both sides of the leather shall be smooth and free of loose flesh. Middle splits, head splits, and shoulder splits shall not be used. The leather shall be chrome tanned, 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 ounce weight, and light gray in color. The components in each pair of gloves shall be of the same color.
3.2.2 Lining material. The inside of the leather gauntlet front and back shall be lined with unbleached cotton duck. The cloth shall weight not less than 8.25 ounces per square yard and shall have a minimum tear strength of not less than 4 pounds in the warp and 3 pounds in the filling. There shall be a lining of knitted wool-cotton plaited cloth on the inside back extending from the bottom of the gauntlet facing to the tips of the fingers. The cotton back of the knitted cloth shall be next to the leather. The knitted cloth shall be a wool/cotton fabric of not less than 50’s grade fleece or pulled new wool. The cotton backing yarn shall not be more than 30 percent of the weight of the cloth. The scoured and finished cloth shall range in weight from 9 to 11 ounces square yard.
3.3 Thread sewing. The thread for sewing shall be unbleached cotton.
3.4 Sizes and measurements. The finished gloves shall conform to the following measurement:
Each glove measure shall be 12-1/4 inches in length and 3-1/2 inches in hand width for the smallest size, running upwards in a 1/2-inch grade.

3.5 Labels. A commercial-type label is acceptable, provided that an additional printed cloth label containing the contractor’s name, contract number, size, and National Stock Number (NSN) is caught on the stitching of the commercial label. The commercial label shall include fiber and laundering information.
3.6 Labeling. Each item shall be individually bar-coded with a paper tag for personal clothing items. The paper tag shall be standard bleached sulfate having a basis weight of 100 pounds. The paper used for the tags shall have a smooth finish to accept thermal transfer and direct printing. The tags shall have a hole and shall be attached to each item by a fastener, clearly legible and readable by a scanner. The bar coding element shall be a 13 digit national stock number (NSN).
