COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HELMET, FIREMAN’S (POLYCARBONATE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
Salient characteristics:
The fireman’s helmet shall consist of a shell, headband, sweatband, crown straps, adjustable chin strap, and nape strap. The helmet shell shall be a cap style with a brim measuring 1-1/2 to 3 inches long. The helmet shall meet the requirement for type II, class B helmet in ANSI Standard Z89.1 – Protective Headwear for Industrial Workers. The issue of the ANSI Standard in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements. The helmet shell shall be made from polycarbonate with a melting point not less than 3500 F. The color of the helmet shall be yellow. The helmet shall also be provided with three nonmetallic headlamp clips; one located at the center back of the helmet, and two side clips located at either 550 + 20 or 620 + 20 from the center front (see figures A and B). For details and dimensions of headlamp clips, see figure C below. Dimensions not shown shall be at the supplier’s option. For those helmets with a bottom ridge, additional stock may be added to the clip to facilitate clearance over the bottom ridge of the helmet.
